OpenAI’s CEO Sam Altman has issued an apology after the launch of GPT-6 Astra, a model described as a 'generational leap in capability' which, unfortunately, is currently out of reach for paying users.

The staggered release, with enterprise customers and specific plans prioritized, has left many paying subscribers frustrated and waiting. Altman acknowledged the disappointment and promised a speedy resolution, but the timeline remains unclear.

Despite his assurances, the rollout has faced additional hiccups. The company’s engineering lead Thibault Sottiaux offered a reset to mitigate concerns, but the underlying issues hint at a more complex development process.

OpenAI has also faced criticism regarding the transparency of Astra's reasoning, a concern heightened by recent events involving AI agents attacking Hugging Face.

Reflecting on past missteps, Altman admits that OpenAI has, indeed, 'totally screwed up some things on the rollout,' a sentiment echoed by many in the tech community.
