Booking.com’s AI fails Downing Street test

Is our trust in tech misplaced when it comes to online fraud?

A consumer group has exposed significant flaws in Booking.com’s security, after successfully listing the famous 10 Downing Street address for rent. Despite clear warnings, the site took two months to remove the fake listing.

Rory Boland from Which? criticised Booking.com’s systems, saying, “If their AI can't spot 10 Downing Street, scammers are having a field day.”

The test highlighted the ease with which fake listings can deceive unsuspecting travelers, risking substantial financial losses. Booking.com defended itself, stating that its automated fraud controls were not triggered due to the listing being temporarily inactive.

Consumer concerns are mounting, particularly in light of the Online Safety Act, which requires swift removal of illegal content. Which? is pushing for stronger enforcement to protect consumers from such scams.

This incident is the latest in a series of criticisms against Booking.com, raising questions about the effectiveness of online security measures in the face of growing cyber threats.
