AI-led Hike Goes South on Mount Shasta

Is Gemini’s advice too good to be true? Not when it comes to mountain safety.

Three hikers were rescued from California’s Mount Shasta this week after an expedition planned with Google’s AI chatbot Gemini, according to the Chicago Tribune. The trio, who set off at 3am, reached the summit by 7pm but got stuck in the dark, needing rescue the next morning. The sheriff’s office blamed Gemini for underestimating their food and water needs, turning an 8-hour ascent into a multiday ordeal.

While Gemini provided useful directions, the hikers were advised to bring ‘far less food and water than their group required.’ The sheriff’s office warns, 'It is always advisable to call the local USFS Mount Shasta ranger station ahead of your trip to ensure you have the most accurate information, and to never rely solely on AI for your trip planning.'

This case highlights the growing reliance on AI for planning and decision-making in outdoor activities. While AI can be a valuable tool, it should not replace human judgment, especially in dangerous environments. The incident on Mount Shasta serves as a reminder to always verify information and consider multiple sources before embarking on adventurous pursuits.

For now, the hikers remain grateful for their rescue, but the experience may change their approach to future outdoor adventures.
