Tristan Buckmaster, a New York University mathematics professor, and his colleague Levent Alpöge, from Anthropic, had published findings on a related problem just one day prior to OpenAI's announcement. Buckmaster claims OpenAI had access to their Codex data, which he and Alpöge had been using throughout their project. OpenAI, however, maintains that no specific user data was accessed, but cannot rule out the possibility of de-identified data aiding their model.
Sebastien Bubeck, a member of technical staff at OpenAI, stated, 'We did not see any of their work until they released it publicly last night. One can in hindsight see that our proofs differ significantly and even the precise results proved are different.'
