Apple is reportedly developing an AI server powered by its high-performance M-series Ultra chips, which are currently used in Mac desktops. This product, set for release in 2029, marks Apple’s first server since 2003 and could leverage the growing popularity of Apple hardware among AI developers.

According to The Information, the enterprise server will come in two forms: one with two and another with four M8 Ultra chips. The project, supported by Apple’s new CEO, John Ternus, was initiated a year ago, a period marked by strong sales of Mac minis and Mac Studios.

The surge in sales for these devices is attributed to their suitability for running AI workloads. AI companies like OpenAI and Anthropic have been keen buyers, with OpenAI reportedly purchasing tens of thousands of Mac minis and Mac Studios to train AI agents through reinforcement learning.

The success of these machines in the AI space has undoubtedly encouraged Apple to pursue an enterprise server using the same chips. As AI continues to transform industries, Apple’s foray into this market could position it as a key player in the tech landscape.
