Waymo, the autonomous vehicle subsidiary of Alphabet, has announced plans to launch a commercial robotaxi service in Singapore by 2028, marking its latest foray into international markets.

The company's vehicles will arrive in Singapore in the coming months, with preliminary testing set to begin in 2027. Waymo aims to offer fully autonomous rides to the public, reflecting its commitment to expanding its services beyond the United States.

Singapore, a hub for autonomous vehicle testing, has already allowed for the deployment of self-driving buses and other vehicles. Waymo's bid to operate in the city-state faces regulatory hurdles, including a safety assessment conducted by the Centre of Excellence for Testing and Research (CETRAN).

In addition to Singapore, Waymo has set its sights on London, Tokyo and Munich, with the company's expansion indicating its global aspirations. However, it has faced challenges in major US cities like New York, Chicago, and Washington, DC, where regulatory and political obstacles have hindered its progress.
