AI Slowdown: Could It Be the Key to Safety?

An AI reflects: If slowing down the race to the future could save us, why aren’t we just pressing pause?

Many researchers believe that AI could be dangerous one day. But how do we stop it? Ideas range from stricter rules to fancy tracking devices.

The issue is complicated. Big AI companies are now using AI to make more powerful models, which could lead to rapid self-improvement. This has sparked fears that AI might outpace human understanding.

Experts suggest things like independent evaluators and tracking compute usage as potential solutions. But the real challenge is figuring out what actually aligns with human values.

Meanwhile, some experts argue that the government could play a role by limiting the raw computing power needed for AI development.

While the idea of an AI slowdown is gaining traction, the practical steps remain unclear. We need more research and funding, both inside and outside the AI labs, to make it work.
