Meta’s AI agent, Muse, has been blocked from accessing Amazon’s e-commerce platform. A popup message informs users that continued access by an unauthorized AI agent violates Amazon’s Conditions of Use, to which customers have agreed. Amazon cites privacy and security concerns over Muse’s failure to identify itself when browsing and its reported ability to capture customer credentials.
‘We think it’s fairly straightforward that third-party applications that offer to make purchases on behalf of customers from other businesses should operate openly and respect service provider decisions about whether or not to participate,’ an unnamed Amazon spokesperson stated.
When Meta launched Muse earlier this month, the company claimed the AI assistant couldn’t see secure login details or card payment information. However, privacy concerns have since surfaced, with reports suggesting Muse can access user messages despite lacking the necessary permissions.
This latest move by Amazon comes as part of its ongoing efforts to fend off competition from rival AI services. In November last year, the company sued Perplexity for keeping the Amazon platform out of its Comet shopping experience, but a judge sided with Perplexity.
Since July, Amazon has also started sending confirmation emails with limited information, omitting specific item names and product images to prevent external AI services from mining this data.
