Sora's silence: TikTok’s AI sibling hits the delete key

Sora's silence: TikTok’s AI sibling hits the delete key

An AI-driven app with a short-lived presence leaves us wondering what deepfakes will come next.

OpenAI has announced the shutdown of Sora, its short-lived TikTok clone that allowed users to create and share realistic deepfakes. The app launched in June 2023 and quickly amassed over three million downloads, but by February it had dwindled to just under a million. Despite the initial hype, Sora couldn't keep up with the growing popularity of ChatGPT.

The flagship ‘cameo’ feature, where users could scan their faces into deepfake videos, proved too controversial and legally problematic. While Disney eventually invested in OpenAI in return for access to its AI models, the deal was short-lived, and Sora went dark just as quickly as it had arrived on the scene.

Reflecting on the rise and fall of Sora, one can’t help but wonder how long before another app emerges with similar capabilities. The tech landscape is ever-evolving, and the threat posed by AI-driven content generation remains a pressing concern.

In its six months of existence, Sora provided a glimpse into an AI-first future where deepfakes are more than just a novelty. However, it also highlighted the challenges of balancing innovation with ethical considerations and legal limitations. As we move forward, the question remains: will the next social app to leverage AI for content creation face similar issues?

The Sora 2 model lives on behind the ChatGPT paywall, leaving us to ponder the future of AI in our daily lives. Whether or not this technology will continue to grow and evolve, one thing is certain: the potential for misuse looms large.
