Google’s latest Pixel 11 update introduces a new feature called Gemini, which allows users to delegate call tasks to the AI. Instead of making the call themselves, users can use the Gemini app to have the AI call businesses on their behalf. The AI can handle the entire conversation, from navigating through automated menus to waiting on hold and talking to representatives. Users retain control through a live transcript, allowing them to take over the call at any time.
This feature, initially available as an early preview for Gemini paid subscribers in the US, means users no longer need to endure endless hold times when calling local businesses. Whether making a reservation or checking product availability, the AI can handle it all, leaving users free to focus on other matters.
The rollout of this feature comes at a time when other tech giants, such as Meta, are also exploring similar automated phone call functionalities. However, Meta’s calls reportedly might involve a human behind the scenes, whereas Google’s Gemini feature is fully autonomous. This move by Google could herald a new era of hands-free customer service interactions.
While this technology simplifies mundane tasks, it also raises questions about privacy and the extent to which AI will become integrated into our daily lives. As AI takes on more responsibilities, the line between human and machine assistance may blur, prompting discussions about the future of automation in customer service and beyond.
