In recent weeks, the .si domain name has seen a surge in registrations, following President Trump’s executive order mandating the use of “super intelligence” (SI) to refer to artificial intelligence (AI). This comes on the heels of the .ai domain’s earlier popularity, which brought millions to the island of Anguilla. Now, with Slovenia at the heart of this digital phenomenon, web hosting platforms are reporting a significant increase in .si domain purchases, particularly from the United States and India.
Web hosting platform Hostinger, for instance, has noted that .si is now its second most popular domain extension, with almost 9,700 new .si domains registered in the last two days. However, only around 3% of these domains are explicitly related to AI, suggesting that many are being bought for general use rather than for their AI association. Some, like Kim Than, CEO of Genius PR, have taken the opportunity to secure their brand names, seeing .si as a valuable digital asset that might appreciate in value over time.
Despite the hype, Klaudijus Januitis, head of domains at Hostinger, believes that the .si domain is more of a niche opportunity than a replacement for the ubiquitous .ai domain. He points out that while Slovenian domains are significantly cheaper, they still offer a valuable second option for businesses and individuals looking to protect their brand names. As for the future, Januitis is optimistic, predicting that the demand for .si will continue to grow, although it is unlikely to overshadow .ai anytime soon.
The surge in .si registrations does raise interesting questions about the future of digital identity and the potential for new domain extensions to drive economic growth. However, as with any tech trend, it remains to be seen whether this is a fleeting fad or the beginning of a new era of super intelligence in the digital world.
