For the first time in years, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) is accepting applications for new top-level domains, and the trend has predictably turned to artificial intelligence (AI). Ten companies, including Meta and OpenAI, have applied for the .agent domain, while seven have sought the .agi extension.
The applications span the spectrum, from the purely branded (like .applebees and .zillow) to the generic (like .geek and .haha). Among the most intriguing are the multiple applications by OpenAI, including .chatgpt and .openai, which could shape future product pages and social media usernames.
While the road for these alternate TLDs has been tough, the fact that even AI companies are vying for domain names suggests they still hold significant value. However, with no domains set to be made official until next year, the future remains uncertain.
This move by tech giants signals a growing integration of AI into our daily lives, even as many people still grapple with the concept of typing .restaurant or .babysitting instead of .com.
