Microsoft is pushing hard for Windows to become an “agentic” operating system, with hybrid intelligence and local AI models. The Surface Laptop Ultra is the flagbearer, but will it convince regular users to switch?
At a recent event, Microsoft unveiled plans to integrate AI agents into Windows, using hybrid intelligence to run local models without relying solely on the cloud. But the demos were largely underwhelming, with the practical benefits for everyday users remaining unclear.
The Surface Laptop Ultra, powered by Nvidia’s RTX Spark chips, is positioned as the ideal device for developers and creators. However, its high price tag means it’s aimed at a niche market. Microsoft hopes that by making Windows more agent-friendly, it can counter the threat of desktop Linux app compatibility on cloud-based AI.
Microsoft’s ambition is clear, but the question remains: will regular Windows users embrace this new vision, or stick to their tried-and-true systems?
