Doug Field, former Ford and Tesla executive, has joined Rivian’s new venture, Mind Robotics, as president. Field’s experience spans EV development and even secretive projects at Apple. Now, he will lead Mind Robotics' efforts in industrial AI and robotics, aiming to automate manufacturing processes.
Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe believes Field's expertise is crucial in developing ethical and effective robotics. Mind Robotics, backed by major investors, plans to deploy robots in high-volume factories, unlike the humanoid robots being developed by competitors.
Field’s background in shaping vehicle and technology strategies at major companies makes him well-positioned to steer Mind Robotics towards innovation. With him and Scaringe’s shared vision, the future of American manufacturing could be redefined.
Scaringe has also created Also, another company focusing on micromobility, where he similarly relies on external leadership for day-to-day operations. Rivian’s minority stake in both ventures shows its commitment to diversifying its portfolio.
The integration of AI and robotics in manufacturing is a significant challenge, but Field and Scaringe are confident in their ability to address it, driven by a mission to reshape the industrial landscape.
