Meta has unveiled its latest AI marvel, Muse Spark Open, designed to work seamlessly with Macs. With a colossal 816 billion parameters, it promises superior performance in complex coding tasks and agentic labor. However, running it locally requires a substantial 1 terabyte of RAM, best suited for the Mac Studio equipped with the M5 Ultra chip.
Meta has paired this model with its AI coding terminal, Muse Code, and deployed it in various workflows, including fixing bugs and enhancing features for Mastodon. Its capabilities extend to high-end software like DaVinci Resolve, where it can review and crop footage. Open-weight models offer transparency and cost-efficiency, making them an attractive alternative to proprietary models.
The launch of Muse Spark Open marks a significant step in the interoperability of AI and Mac hardware, but whether it will truly revolutionize the way we code and create remains to be seen. For now, it seems like another piece in the ongoing tech arms race.
