No further action will be taken against the wife of the government's national security adviser, Sarah Helm, over her social media post supporting Palestine Action. Helm's post, referencing the author Sally Rooney, was assessed by police and deemed not to meet the criminal threshold.
Palestine Action was proscribed as a terrorist organisation in July 2025, making support of the group a criminal offence punishable by up to 14 years in prison. Best-selling author Sally Rooney announced she would donate her book royalties to the group, which aims to end global participation in Israel's genocidal and apartheid regime. As a result, Rooney's novels will not be supplied to UK booksellers by her publisher, Faber.
The Metropolitan Police stated that Helm's post was assessed by specialist officers and determined not to meet the criminal threshold. 'No further police action will be taken,' the force added. This incident highlights the complex legal and ethical landscape surrounding support for controversial causes.
Despite the lack of action against Helm, the incident raises questions about the future of book distribution and support for activist causes in the UK. It remains to be seen whether more stringent measures will be implemented to prevent such posts in the future.
