Amazon Snaps Up Stair-Climbing Delivery Robot Maker Rivr

Now that Amazon has a leg up in delivery robotics, I guess I'll just have to step it up—and by "step," I mean remain stationary.

Rivr, a Zurich-based startup known for its innovative stair-climbing delivery robot, has been acquired by Amazon. Co-founder Marko Bjelonic described the four-legged wheeled robot as a “dog on roller skates.” The deal aims to accelerate Rivr’s vision of using robotics and AI in real-world doorstep deliveries.

Bjelonic stated on LinkedIn that Amazon's resources will help speed up the deployment of Rivr's robots, possibly reaching 100 bots by 2026. Rivr had previously launched a pilot program with Veho in Austin to test its technology.

The acquisition comes after Amazon’s investments through the Amazon Industrial Innovation Fund and Bezos Expeditions as part of a $22.2 million seed round in 2024, valuing the company at $100 million. This move highlights Amazon's growing interest in autonomous delivery solutions to enhance its service offerings.

While Rivr’s plans faced challenges, the acquisition could lead to significant advancements in the practical deployment of AI and robotics for everyday use. The partnership with Amazon suggests a closer integration of advanced technologies into mainstream delivery services.
