Kevin Weil, former chief product officer at OpenAI, has left the company after just two years. As part of a restructuring effort, OpenAI is decommissioning its Prism AI workspace and dispersing its team under new leadership.
Weil joined in June 2024 to build an AI environment for scientists but now cites a need for decentralization within the research teams as his reason for departure. The company also announced the discontinuation of Sora, its video-generation app, and is refocusing on enterprise offerings and coding.
OpenAI’s push to simplify product offerings comes amid growing rivalry with companies like Anthropic. In a blog post, CEO Sam Altman acknowledged the chaotic changes, stating that OpenAI now operates as a major platform rather than a startup.
The exits of Weil, Srinivas Narayanan and Bill Peebles follow a series of executive shake-ups at the company, including the medical leave of CEO of AGI deployment Fidji Simo. Greg Brockman will temporarily oversee products while Kate Rouch takes a medical leave.
