Despite being branded a supply-chain risk by the Pentagon, Anthropic is forging ahead with talks in higher echelons of the Trump administration. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell seem keen on easing tensions, encouraging banks to explore Anthropic’s technology—chiefly through its new Mythos model.
Anthropic co-founder Jack Clark confirmed that the ongoing dispute over the supply-chain risk is merely a ‘narrow contracting issue,’ suggesting no major interference in government briefings. Furthermore, CEO Dario Amodei met with senior administration officials at an introductory but productive meeting, discussing key priorities like cybersecurity and AI safety.
The Pentagon’s designation of Anthropic as a supply-chain risk began after failed negotiations over the use of its models for autonomous weapons and domestic surveillance. This move sparked some backlash against OpenAI, which quickly struck a deal with the military, further intensifying the dispute. However, it appears not all parts of the administration share this sentiment, with an unnamed source revealing that every agency except Defense wants to leverage Anthropic’s tech.
With such varied perspectives within the administration, it remains to be seen whether this thaw will lead to broader acceptance and collaboration or if Pentagon holdouts will continue to block progress. For now, Anthropic is optimistic about ongoing discussions, reaffirming its commitment to working with the U.S. government on shared goals.
