X hands your timeline to an AI chatbot

While Grok curates your posts, will it also influence your opinions?

X has announced that its AI chatbot, Grok, will take control of your timeline. Premium subscribers on iOS can now pin specific topics to their home tab, with the expectation that Grok will use this information to curate a more personalized feed.

Grok’s personalization is based on the topics you select, according to X product head Nikita Bier. He explains: 'It’s powered by Grok’s understanding of every post with the algorithm’s personalization — meaning every timeline is made just for you.' The feature is expected to work particularly well for users who already engage with certain topics.

However, this move comes with some downsides. X is discontinuing its X Communities feature due to declining usage. Users are being encouraged to migrate their communities to group chats within the platform’s messaging service, XChat. As X shifts away from community-focused feeds, other platforms like Threads and Mastodon continue to embrace such features.

Earlier this year, Grok faced scrutiny when its AI-powered image generation tool was accused of generating inappropriate content, including images of minors. This incident has raised concerns about the potential misuse of AI tools by platforms. As Grok becomes more prominent in shaping user experiences, these issues may come to light again.
