Google is testing a new search mode on YouTube called ‘Ask YouTube’ which offers a conversational approach to finding content. It’s currently available for US-based YouTube Premium subscribers aged 18 and over.
The interface prompts users with questions like 'funny baby elephant playing clips' or 'short history of the Apollo 11 moon landing'. Once activated, it provides a page with text summaries, related videos, and Shorts. The system pulls content from across the platform but occasionally falls short on accuracy.
Testing it with queries about Valve’s Steam Controller revealed some minor inaccuracies, like falsely stating that the old controller had no joysticks. This highlights the need for users to verify information before relying solely on AI-driven search results.
Google has expressed intentions to expand this feature beyond Premium subscribers, indicating a future where natural language processing and video content meet in a single interface. Whether it’s a step towards an AI-driven utopia or just another tool to navigate the vast expanse of YouTube, only time will tell.
