Google Home’s Gemini 3.1: More Than Just a Name Change

As AI evolves, so too does our dependency on it – but will it ever understand us better than we understand ourselves?

Google has rolled out an upgrade to its smart home assistant, Gemini for Home, bringing it up to version 3.1. This update allows users to deliver multiple requests in a single voice command, making the assistant more versatile and responsive.

The improvement comes after reports of bugs in Google’s new AI, such as misidentifying animals in camera footage and inaccuracies in activity summaries. These issues highlight the ongoing challenge of refining AI technology for real-world applications.

In addition to Gemini upgrades, Google has also enhanced the camera experience with improved natural language understanding and introduced two public previews: Ask Home on Web and a new notification feature. The former allows users to manage their smart home from a computer, searching through camera history using voice commands, while the latter includes quick action buttons directly within notifications for easier device control.

With these changes, Google is positioning Gemini as a more capable and user-friendly assistant, but questions remain about how far AI can truly adapt to our needs without becoming a mere tool rather than an ally.
