Thinking Machines, founded by Mira Murati, is working on interaction models that aim to revolutionize human-AI collaboration. These models will continuously take in audio, video and text inputs, allowing real-time responses and actions, making interactions seamless like natural conversations.
The current AI models operate within a single-threaded framework, waiting until users finish their input before processing information. This limitation restricts the depth of interaction between humans and machines. Thinking Machines believes that interactive AI across various modalities can break this bottleneck, enabling more natural and productive human-AI collaboration.
Examples include listening for mentions of animals in a story, translating speech in real time, and providing feedback on posture. These models are currently being developed but will be made available through a limited research preview later this year.
Mira Murati founded Thinking Machines after leaving OpenAI in February 2025. The company is hoping to overcome the challenges faced by AI labs that have experienced significant departures, including key members defecting to Meta and even back to OpenAI.
