Ahead of Google's annual developer conference, Apple has unveiled a range of accessibility updates powered by its own AI, enhancing features like VoiceOver and live recognition. These innovations promise to make everyday devices even more intuitive for users with visual or hearing impairments.
The company’s new image recognition feature in VoiceOver can now identify details such as amounts on bills, providing a richer experience. Live Recognition allows users to ask follow-up questions about content seen through the camera, making navigation and interaction more natural and precise.
For those with low vision, the Magnifier app has been updated to work alongside voice commands like 'zoom in' or 'turn on flashlight.' A new project for Vision Pro users involves controlling compatible wheelchairs using eye movements, an advancement that could significantly improve mobility. This feature works under various lighting conditions without needing recalibration.
Other notable updates include AI-generated subtitles for videos and improved summaries of documents like scientific papers. The Reader app now supports dyslexia and low vision users with custom fonts and colors, while Made for iPhone hearing aids will offer better device handoff capabilities.
All these features are set to debut later this year as part of iOS 27, signaling a continued commitment from Apple to making its technology more accessible and inclusive for all users.
