On Tuesday at Google IO 2026, the tech giant unveiled its latest innovation: native Android app creation capabilities in its web-based Google AI Studio. This means anyone, from seasoned developers to first-time coders, can now build apps in minutes rather than weeks.
The process is simple and accessible, with apps built using Kotlin and Jetpack Compose, complete with hardware sensor support for GPS, Bluetooth, and NFC. However, these creations are currently meant for personal use only, with plans to expand publishing options soon.
Google envisions an app ecosystem where users find apps from their networks rather than just the Play Store. To achieve this, the 'Ask Play' feature will allow natural conversations within the Play Store to discover new apps, while Gemini’s virtual assistant will surface over 450,000 movies and TV shows, linking directly to developer apps with relevant content.
For developers looking to take their projects further, AI Studio can automatically create app records, package bundles, and upload them to Google Play Console. This could revolutionise the way we develop and discover apps, making the process more democratic and accessible than ever before.
