Spotify has unveiled a new desktop app called Studio by Spotify Labs that uses AI to create podcasts based on users' emails, schedules, and web browsing activity. The app, which is currently in research preview for select users, allows for multistep requests such as generating a daily audio brief tailored to a road trip through Italy.
While this tool competes with Google’s NotebookLM, Spotify’s move highlights the growing trend of integrating AI into our daily routines. With personal context and web browsing capabilities, it's clear that companies are aiming for seamless integration of work and leisure.
The launch follows Spotify’s recent command-line tool for users of coding tools like Claude Code or Codex to create their own podcasts. This feature extends the potential audience for this technology beyond coders, opening up possibilities not just in podcasting but also as a digital assistant that captures system audio for note-taking purposes.
As AI becomes more ingrained in our daily lives, it raises questions about privacy and consent. Will we soon have to ask permission before thinking? Spotify’s Studio app might be the first step towards a world where every thought is recorded and every action monitored by some form of technology.
