Waymo’s Ojai: A New Ride in Self-Driving Minivans

Will the world accept Chinese-made self-driving cars, or will they just drive around for free?

Waymo is set to launch its new autonomous minivan, Ojai, in select US cities. These retro-futuristic vehicles, equipped with an array of sensors, are designed to operate without a human driver. The company's ambitious expansion plans include launching services in London and Tokyo.

Ojai marks a significant departure from Waymo’s previous models, featuring more accessible cabin designs suitable for passengers with disabilities, albeit not wheelchair-accessible.

The vehicle is a modified version of Geely’s Zeekr platform, manufactured in China. This move has sparked debates about national security and the role of Chinese manufacturers in American self-driving technology.

Free rides will be available initially to gather feedback from early users, but Waymo must navigate regulatory hurdles before commercial operations can commence. The California Public Utilities Commission is set to decide on these matters by June 27th.
