A group of mathematicians has issued a warning against the increasing influence of technology companies on their field. At issue is the ongoing disruption caused by artificial intelligence models that are beginning to challenge traditional mathematical research methods.
Following an eight-month collaboration, the Leiden Declaration on Artificial Intelligence and Mathematics was published on 2 June 2026. This document highlights concerns about AI's impact on core values of mathematical research, particularly its influence on students and early-career mathematicians.
The declaration warns that AI can generate plausible but unreliable arguments, making it difficult for reviewers to distinguish between correct proofs and flawed ones. As a result, the trustworthiness of the mathematical literature is at risk, with inaccuracies potentially propagating through new research.
“Mathematicians should find it striking that tech companies are now interested in our work,” Kevin Buzzard, from Imperial College London, stated. “This declaration serves as a response to these changes and underscores the need for maintaining rigorous standards of proof.”
