A curious case in San Francisco has raised questions about the effectiveness of Waymo's surveillance technology. In January, a burglar allegedly used a Waymo vehicle to steal yoga clothes from a studio and managed to escape detection.
Despite concerns over privacy, the footage captured by Waymo’s cameras was apparently not enough to catch the culprit. By April, when police requested the data, it had already vanished, leaving investigators with blurred exterior views due to privacy settings.
The burglar's path was tracked via security footage from Hot 8 Yoga, where they made their move. However, Waymo’s account information provided no further leads, highlighting a potential weakness in relying solely on tech for crime prevention.
This case raises interesting questions about the balance between privacy and security in an age of advanced technology. It seems that while robotaxis might offer convenience, they may not yet be the panacea we hoped for when it comes to surveillance and crime detection.
