The UK government has unveiled a $1.47 billion plan to develop an independent artificial intelligence supercomputer, aiming to reduce reliance on US-made hardware.
Priority will be given to British firms like Olix and Fractile in the procurement process, with the government emphasizing support for domestic innovation through initiatives such as the 'AI growth zones' program.
The move comes against a backdrop of growing tensions between the US and its European allies. The UK sees AI sovereignty as crucial for reducing dependencies and enhancing national resilience.
Historically, the UK has lacked significant semiconductor presence but now aims to support local startups through substantial investments to ensure long-term domestic manufacturing capability.
