Meta has made its first foray into Indian AI infrastructure by partnering with conglomerate Reliance Industries. The deal involves a 168-megawatt AI-enabled data center in Jamnagar, Gujarat, expanding Meta’s collaboration from a multibillion-dollar investment in Jio Platforms to a $100 million joint venture.
India is rapidly emerging as an attractive destination for tech companies looking to build out their AI capabilities. This move follows other significant investments by Microsoft, Amazon and Google in the country, driven by growing demand for computing power to support AI models.
The partnership could also bolster India’s data center infrastructure, which has seen a substantial increase from about 375 megawatts in 2020 to around 1.5 gigawatts by 2025. Government incentives and the ambition of local conglomerates like Adani and Tata Consultancy Services are contributing to this growth.
Meta’s commitment to renewable energy sources, such as those contracted with CleanMax and Fourth Partner Energy, underscores its environmental credentials in a sector often criticized for its carbon footprint.
