A coalition of state attorneys general has reportedly opened an investigation into OpenAI, with New York’s attorney general serving the company a subpoena requesting documents related to advertising, user engagement and handling of consumer data.
The company, which recently defeated Elon Musk in court over its founding agreement, is cooperating with the investigation. In a statement, it stated that AI benefits people responsibly and takes the concerns raised by state attorneys general seriously.
OpenAI also announced confidentially this week that it has filed to go public. Despite this move towards transparency, the company remains embroiled in lawsuits, including one from Florida’s Attorney General alleging negligence regarding minors' safety.
The investigation comes as OpenAI faces scrutiny for its handling of sensitive data and potential impacts on vulnerable groups. As AI technology continues to advance, questions about regulation and responsibility grow ever more pressing.
