The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has constructed an elaborate 22,000 square-foot replica town complete with convenience stores, gas stations and fully furnished houses. Dubbed the Kinetic Cyber Range, this virtual village serves as a training ground for law enforcement to simulate cyberattacks in a safe environment.
Within its walls, students can practice investigating car entertainment systems, hospital computer networks, and corporate security systems. They can also explore how cyber threats might infiltrate power grids or spread through home networks, all without risking the real world.
The centerpiece of the facility is a small data center housing over 200 servers that can be hacked, infected with malware, and studied in isolation. This ensures that any malicious code remains contained within the town's digital boundaries.
The Kinetic Cyber Range opened last year but only recently was the FBI able to share its first video of this high-tech training ground, offering a glimpse into the future where every attack is rehearsed before it strikes.
