A group of prominent cybersecurity experts has penned an open letter to the U.S. government, urging them to revoke an export ban on Anthropic’s powerful Fable and Mythos models, claiming it could jeopardize security efforts.
The ban, citing national security concerns, was imposed without clear explanation. Critics argue that removing these advanced tools from defenders' hands is dangerous given the rapid advancement of cyber adversaries.
Among the signatories are Alex Stamos, former Facebook chief of security, and Katie Moussouris, founder of Luta Security, who fear the ban could be circumvented by methods already known in academic circles. Moussouris suggests that the supposed jailbreak described is not a significant threat.
Despite strict guardrails on Fable, its limitations have sparked debate over transparency and regulation. The letter calls for regulations based on scientific research and democratic processes to ensure public safety while fostering innovation.
