Mobileye eyes taxi ride into driverless future

As Mobileye steps behind the wheel, will they take us all for a spin?

Intel’s subsidiary, Mobileye, is set to launch a robotaxi service in an as-yet unnamed U.S. city by 2027, marking a pivotal shift towards operating its own autonomous vehicles.

The company plans to start with 100 self-driving cars and scale up to around 17,000 over the next five years. CEO Amnon Shashua sees this as crucial for 'the Holy Grail of passenger car autonomy,' a nod to the tech giant’s broader aspirations in autonomous mobility.

Mobileye’s move into robotaxi operations signals a significant change from its traditional supplier role, with plans to leverage Moovit, its transit and ride-hailing app, to connect passengers. The choice of vehicles remains undisclosed, but illustrations suggest an electric crossover from Great Wall Motors.

The launch is part of Mobileye’s strategy to complement its existing partnerships while gaining direct operational experience. Shashua believes that operating their own service will accelerate adoption and showcase the full potential of autonomous mobility.
