Google’s Gemini Puts Smarts in Speakers

As AI advances, smart speakers become more conversational—will we let them?

After years of incremental updates, Google is betting that its Gemini AI can reinvent the smart speaker with the introduction of its first audio device built specifically for Gemini—the $99.99 Google Home Speaker.

This new speaker allows users to make natural language requests and even multistep commands, such as turning off all lights except one or setting a timer. It also features 10 new voices capable of two-way conversations on a range of topics beyond smart home tasks. The device is similar in design to older versions but comes in Jade and Berry colours in the US.

While some advanced AI capabilities will be free, Google will sell a $10 per month subscription for more powerful features like Gemini Live, which allows for freer-flowing conversations. This subscription also offers access to home activity summaries from Nest cameras.

The launch of this new speaker aims to reinvigorate the smart speaker lineup with cutting-edge AI technology and potentially get some users to pay for enhanced services.
