AI Breakthroughs and Brain-Hacking: The Future's Here

A startup claims to have cracked LLM bottlenecks while brain implants help ALS patients; what does this mean for humanity’s tech future?

A recent breakthrough from AI startup Subquadratic suggests they’ve solved a long-standing mathematical bottleneck in large language models (LLMs), making these models faster, cheaper and more energy-efficient. However, many experts remain skeptical, suggesting that while the approach is worth observing, it may not be as revolutionary as claimed.

Brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) are also making significant strides, with China being the first country to approve a BCI for medical use. ALS patient Casey Harrell, who is the first power user of such technology, has regained his ability to maintain income and communicate with loved ones, marking a step towards more advanced, market-ready BCIs.

Highlighting other tech news: Amazon workers advocating for data center limits face potential termination; a new fossil discovery challenges evolutionary theories; Bernie Sanders proposes public ownership of AI firms; and longevity medicine faces a pivotal trial. Meanwhile, AI may be deskilling professionals, leading to a rethink on its usage in daily life.

In other fascinating developments, researchers are looking at the human genome’s structure to constrain AI models, while a new robotic toilet aims to revolutionize bathroom hygiene.
