A Tesla Model 3 equipped with its automated driver-assistance mode was involved in a tragic crash that killed an elderly woman in her home in Texas. The car, operated by Michael Butler, allegedly veered off the road and hit the residence at high speed, killing 76-year-old Martha Avila.
No one else was hurt, but the family is devastated, especially as Avila was expected to live much longer. She leaves behind her daughter Jennifer Barbour and her three grandkids who now mourn their loss in a hotel, unsure of what caused the accident.
The Harris County Sheriff’s Office is investigating whether Tesla Autopilot played any role, noting that Butler did not appear intoxicated and cooperated fully. The doorbell camera captured the moment the car plowed through the front wall of the home, causing significant damage to the residence.
Barbour emphasized her mother was in good health and had no medications when she passed away. The family is now facing uncertainty over who or what should bear responsibility for this accident: Butler or Tesla's technology.
