Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-FL) has denied that her staff used artificial intelligence to write the text of a major defense funding amendment. Instead, she claims they merely used AI for βspellcheckβ on the summary.
Luna issued this response after screenshots of an amendment summary for the 2027 National Defense Authorization Act were shared online, sparking speculation that AI was involved in drafting legislation. The summary read: 'Identical to H.R. 100 (118th Congress).11:25 AM????Claude responded: Requires the Secretary of Defense to designate Department of Defense activities, support, and operations at the southwest land border as a named operation withβ¦'
Initially, her comments seemed to suggest that AI was used for drafting. However, after further scrutiny from users on X, Luna clarified that the staff only used AI βto spell/grammar check the amendment SUMMARY, not the actual amendment text itself.β She also added: 'FYI NO Legislation is ever drafted with AI. All bill text from the House comes from the House Legislative Council which is prohibited from using AI.'
As AI tools become more prevalent in workplaces, concerns over their use are growing. Judges have caught lawyers using AI chatbots to draft legal filings filled with fake citations, and lawmakers worldwide are increasingly turning to the technology.
