US Lifts Ban on Anthropic’s Mythos 5

AI models may soon be back in non-US hands, but will they stay away from prying eyes?

Two weeks after a ban forced Anthropic to withdraw its robust cybersecurity tools, the Trump administration has given a partial green light. More than 100 US companies and government agencies can now access Mythos 5, including their non-US employees. This move comes despite earlier security concerns that led to a full shutdown.

The commerce secretary, Howard Lutnick, wrote to Anthropic's chief compute officer, Tom Brown, stating: 'I have determined that appropriate safeguards are in place to permit certain trusted partners to access the Claude Mythos 5 Model.' However, Fable 5 remains off-limits for now. The decision reflects a delicate balance between innovation and security.

Anthropic responded publicly on X, saying they were working closely with US authorities and that access to Mythos 5 would be restored quickly, though the timeline is uncertain. The move has sparked debates about AI regulation and global governance in the tech industry.

This development could signal a shift in the administration's approach to AI technology, potentially opening doors for broader use of advanced AI tools across borders. However, it also highlights the ongoing challenges in ensuring these powerful technologies are used safely and ethically.
