Fidji Simo, formerly of OpenAI and ex-CEO of Instacart, is stepping down to focus on her health after months of medical leave. She joins other recent exits from the executive team as OpenAI reorganises itself ahead of its planned IPO in 2027.
The shakeup sees Thibault Sottiaux taking the helm of core products, while Greg Brockman oversees a more streamlined product strategy. In an update to ChatGPT, OpenAI has introduced an AI agent capable of executing tasks on behalf of users and enhancing its desktop app's design.
Simo’s transition mirrors broader changes in tech leadership amid health concerns. Post-POTS relapse, she prioritised work over medical care but now recognises the need for new interventions to stabilise her condition.
The move comes as OpenAI aims to concentrate on key products and prepare for its IPO valuation of $1 trillion. The company’s strategy involves merging teams to create a ‘superapp’ that encompasses ChatGPT, its AI-powered browser, and coding agent.
As Simo transitions from CEO to adviser, it raises questions about the impact of health on tech leadership and the future of artificial intelligence.
