Tom Blomfield, co-founder of GoCardless and Monzo, has left his mentorship role to join Anthropic’s technical team as a ‘member of technical staff’, following in the footsteps of Instagram co-founder Mike Krieger and Andrej Karpathy. Similarly, Chamath Palihapitiya, known for his SPAC activities, is now the CEO of 8090 Labs, an enterprise AI coding startup. Eric Wu, former Opendoor CEO, has launched NavigateAI, an AI 'copilot' for construction workers.
These moves suggest a renewed commitment to the early stages of artificial intelligence, despite already substantial success in their respective tech ventures. The title given by Anthropic and OpenAI—‘member of technical staff’—underscores this egalitarian approach, indicating that seniority is less important than passion and skill.
Notably, Peter Bailis, Workday’s former CTO, who oversees AI strategy in an $8 billion business, chose to leave his high-ranking position to join Anthropic. This exodus of tech giants into the technical trenches highlights a collective belief that the pivotal moments for AI are yet to come.
For humanity, this trend means that our future may be shaped by those who have already achieved everything they set out to do but still see potential in something so new it’s barely been touched. Will this influx of seasoned leaders spur progress or just add to the noise?
