The Linux creator, Linus Torvalds, has made his stance clear on the integration of AI tools into the project. He supports their use, stating that if critics have issues with AI-generated code, they can choose to fork the project or walk away.
Writing on the Linux kernel mailing list, Torvalds argued that ‘Linux is not one of those anti-AI projects’. He added that people who reject LLM-gen-AI systems should be ignored, as long as their concerns are respected by others.
The discussion centered around a tool called Sashiko, which claims to find 53.6% of bugs but also generates false positives at a rate within the 20% range. Despite these potential downsides, Torvalds believes in the freedom to experiment with AI tools.
“We’re not forcing anyone to use [LLM tools],” he said, “but I will very loudly ignore people who try to argue against other people from using it.”
