Anthropic has formally established AnthroPAC, a political action committee (PAC) that will contribute to both major parties during the midterms. This move is part of an increasing trend in the AI industry, with companies like Anthropic and others spending substantial resources on shaping regulatory landscapes.
The PAC's funding comes from voluntary employee contributions capped at $5,000, according to Bloomberg. A statement filed with the Federal Election Commission includes a signature by Allison Rossi, Anthropic’s treasurer. TechCrunch has reached out for further details but no additional information is currently available.
Anthropic’s political activities have intensified in parallel with its ongoing legal battle with the Defense Department over AI model usage and regulation. The Washington Post reported that AI companies contributed a staggering $185 million to the midterm races, highlighting the growing influence of tech lobbying.
The creation of AnthroPAC follows reports from February by The New York Times about Public First, another Super PAC allegedly funded by Anthropic, which supported specific regulatory agendas through advertising campaigns. This indicates that AI firms are not only competing in technology but also in the realm of political advocacy and influence.
