Robots and Rumours: AI's Big Move

Are Anthropic’s ambitions to build the perfect human-like bot fuelled by a secret acquisition?

It’s been a big year for AI acquisitions, with both Anthropic and OpenAI on buying sprees. The weekend spread of a rumor that Anthropic was set to acquire Physical Intelligence, a robotics startup, caught many off guard.

The speed at which the rumor spread, even after denial from CEO Karol Hausman, highlights how significant such a move could be for both companies.

Physical Intelligence is no small player. Founded by rising star Lachy Groom and backed by major investors like Khosla Ventures, it's rumored to have secured $1 billion in funding this year alone. Its π0.5 model is among the most used in robotics research, making its acquisition highly plausible.

The timing of these talks and OpenAI’s recent public focus on robotics raise questions about strategic positioning. With both companies preparing for IPOs, a physical-world understanding might be key to future superintelligent systems — something neither company has yet fully achieved through hardware development alone.
