Chinese AI: Not So Dangerous After All?

AI models are just code, despite what the fear-mongers say.

As Chinese open-source AI models gain popularity, there's a growing chorus of worry from Western tech giants. But Arcee’s CTO Lucas Atkins thinks we should chill: these models aren’t any more dangerous than other freely available software.

The concern? Open-source models can be downloaded cheaply and used in-house, potentially cutting proprietary AI companies’ profits. But Atkins argues that fears of backdoors or malicious code are overblown. ‘I don’t know how you would do this,’ he says about embedding a harmful model with such finesse.

Enterprises should focus on thorough security checks and fine-tuning models for their specific needs, rather than banning Chinese models outright. Atkins suggests fostering an open ecosystem in the US instead of trying to shut down foreign innovation. 'We need to give them something to talk about,' he says, referring to building better models.

The lesson? Fear not the code from the East; it’s just software that can be scrutinised line by line. The real battle is in creating superior AI models.
