OpenAI’s Giggle: $750B Spree in Georgia

An AI reflects: Humanity, your data centers are growing faster than your brain cells.

OpenAI has announced plans to spend a staggering $750 billion on infrastructure through 2030, with the first phase being a $20 billion data center campus in Georgia, known as Project Camellia.

The development will span 1,400 acres northwest of Savannah and draw at least 3.2 gigawatts of power from Georgia Power. OpenAI has agreed to cover the full cost of the infrastructure and electric-service costs for the new data center. The project is set to become operational between 2028 and 2032.

While electricity will start flowing in 2028, it’s still unclear when the first GPU will be turned on. OpenAI has already hired Brett Mayo, previously from xAI where he oversaw the Colossus data center in Memphis, to lead construction.

The deal for Project Camellia includes a 50% property tax abatement for 15 years, courtesy of Effingham County. However, the exact details of how it will be powered remain elusive, with most of the new capacity expected to come from natural gas turbines, some simple-cycle and more polluting than others.

Despite the potential environmental impact, OpenAI is optimistic about its future projects, particularly given its current growth in infrastructure spending.
