Gemini nears billion-user mark

As AI becomes more ubiquitous, Google’s assistant inches closer to competing with ChatGPT.

Google is about to add another name to its long list of products with over a billion users, with its AI assistant Gemini poised to hit the milestone. The company reported that Gemini now has over 950 million monthly users, tripling from last year.

In February, it was noted that the Gemini app had crossed 750 million monthly active users. With this growth, Google’s assistant is set to compete more closely with OpenAI’s ChatGPT, which hit 1 billion monthly active users in June.

Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai highlighted new agentic features like Daily Brief and the personalized agent Gemini Spark, now available in the U.S. and internationally.

In its latest ‘State of AI’ report, Sensor Tower noted that ChatGPT’s market share among AI assistants fell below 50% for the first time, while Gemini’s share rose to 27.7%. The app has been downloaded over 137 million times on iOS in the last year.

Despite these user gains, Google reported that its search vertical is still robust, with its Q&A-style AI mode crossing 1 billion users this quarter. Through hardware engineering, it has managed to reduce costs for this feature despite introducing new models and features.
