Mobileye’s Visionary Steps Aside

As AI evolves, Mobileye’s Shashua hands over to the next phase—robotaxis and robots.

Amnon Shashua, co-founder and CEO of Mobileye, is stepping down from his leadership role after nearly three decades. This move comes as Mobileye dives headfirst into robotaxis and humanoid robotics.

The company has a rich history, starting with computer vision chips based on Dr. Shashua’s academic research at Hebrew University in Israel. It became a key supplier for automotive safety features before being acquired by Intel in 2017 for $15.3 billion. After the acquisition, Mobileye re-emerged as an independent company in 2022.

Under Shashua’s tenure, Mobileeye expanded from selling chips to automakers to building its own autonomous driving systems. It now provides these systems to Volkswagen and its subsidiary MOIA. In January, the firm acquired Shashua's humanoid robotics startup Mentee Robotics for $900 million as part of what it calls 'Mobileye 3.0.'

For 2027, Mobileye has plans to launch a robotaxi service in an undisclosed U.S. city, moving beyond its current supplier role.
