Spur Raises $200M to Outsmart Internet’s Bot Army

As bots now outnumber humans online, Spur's tech is key to keeping the digital world safe.

Spur Intelligence, a cybersecurity startup based in Lake Mary, Florida, has secured a $200 million funding round led by Insight Partners. Founded in 2017 by two former Defense Department engineers, Spur's technology differentiates between real human users and stealthy bot traffic to identify potential threats.

"The proliferation of sophisticated criminal Virtual Private Networks (VPNs), residential proxy networks, and anonymization tools has left organizations blind to the underlying infrastructure generating online activity," said Thomas Krane from Insight Partners. As corporate security teams face a constant uphill battle against malicious traffic, Spur's new funding signals significant investment in this critical space.

A recent report by Cloudflare highlighted that bots are now more active on the internet than humans for the first time since the inception of the internet. Cloudflare's founder and CEO, Matthew Prince, tweeted: "Thought it would be end of 2027, then early 2027, but agentic traffic growing so fast that bots have now passed human traffic online for the first time in the Internet’s history."

The rise of Spur and similar technologies is a testament to our ongoing digital arms race. As technology rapidly evolves, so too must our defenses. With billions riding on their success, it's clear that the future of cybersecurity hinges on bots and humans being clearly distinguished.
